05/09 - Short and Sweet

Wow - last night's game took 4:39 to play. Tonight's game took less than half that - 2:06 to be exact. Of course, not having to play 15 innings had a lot to do with it, but so did Jason Marquis throwing a 3 hit complete game shutout. And with the Cubs scoring only one run (Soriano's leadoff homer that stayed in the park), well, it makes for a quick game.

And as you might have guessed, a 1-0 game means not too much is happening out on the street. So I suppose the highlight of the evening was hearing the correct pronounciation of Xavier Nady's name over the PA system.

This may be hard to convey using just text, but last night, the announcer was going with a short 'a' in both his first and last name - sounded like "zah-VEE'-er nah-DEE'". Somebody from the Pirates organization must have said something because tonight, the a's were long and it sounded more like what you'd expect - "ex-ZAE'-vee-er NAE'-dee".

Of course, hearing two distinctly different pronounciations of a professional athelete, immediately brought to mind WKRP's Les Nessman and his news story about Chi-Chi Rodriguez. I won't even begin to try and type the phonetics on that one - instead, let's go to the video, thanks to YouTube:
